Victim-offender mediation

Victim-offender mediation is a form of out-of-court conflict resolution and supports all persons involved in a (criminal) conflict.

TOA

The programme of the VOM is voluntary.

The VOM allows voluntary parties to participate in compensation and to work through the offence together. This means, the victim can say what helps him or her in order to work out the offence and/or to have individual questions answered about the crime. The accused person can guarantee, by exchange with the victim and by co-designing the restitution and by an honest and authentic apology, that the restitution is feasible for them.

Thus, only a solution of restitution is found which both conflict parties design together and with which both conflict parties agree.

Both parties to the conflict can share their backgrounds to the offence or their thoughts and thus come to terms with them.

Through a VOM, the victim has the opportunity to leave the role of victim, to settle the (own) conflict in an autonomous way and to experience restitution by the accused, which is close to the wishes and the living environment of the victim.

A successful offender-victim mediation can avoid time-consuming criminal proceedings and/or civil proceedings.
