Art Competition

With an art contest, we try to connect people before and behind bars and promote understanding through art.

Every year, we call on all prisoners and patients in detention at a psychiatric hospital or a detoxification centre to take part in a contest. They can submit individually painted, designed and created works of art. Any kind of art can be submitted – from paintings to sawn works, from poems to carpentry. Each imprisoned person can send us up to three pieces of art, which will then be judged by an unbiased jury.

There are three categories, with one winner for each, who will be presented and awarded at an opening ceremony. The following categories are up for grabs: Category CREATIVITY I Category CONTENTUAL REALISATION I Category TECHNICAL REALISATION

Since 2019, the competitions have been themed.

In the season 2020/2021 it was: „Yesterday – Today – Tomorrow“.

In 2020, we accompanied the art competition on film and let people who are and were involved in the process have their say. The film shows what the art competition process can look like and describes the good reasons for this offer. Click here for the film.

You have relatives who are currently imprisoned? Then tell them about the art contest and encourage them to participate.

Every year (usually in August or September), a grand opening event takes place, where the submitted works of the respective year are presented for the first time. After that, we lend the works for one year to institutions, public authorities, associations, etc. that pursue the same aims as we do. Our local associations support us in exhibiting the paintings throughout Saxony Anhalt. This offers the opportunity to talk to citizens throughout the state of Saxony Anhalt and to demonstrate that there is more to people in imprisonment and in detention than the stigma of "offender" might suggest in the first place.

Are you interested in exhibiting the artworks of the competition? Find more information in the information sheet for hosting organisations - Informationsblatt für Veranstalter.
